A “police involved” shooting in Westboro has placed a woman in hospital with critical injuries.

According to the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) that is investigating what happened, police made a traffic stop near Churchill Avenue and Avondale at around 1:30 p.m. on March 22. A young woman, 25, left the vehicle and ran away, leading an officer to follow.

“At some point, the officer discharged his firearm and the woman was struck,” the SIU wrote in a report. “She was transported to hospital for treatment. The woman is in critical condition.”

Further details are still unknown at this time, and the SIU declined to comment further. Over a dozen police cars were parked in the normally quiet neighbourhood Friday afternoon and streets in the area were closed.

Two forensic investigators and three investigators are working on the case.

Anyone with information, photos, or videos are asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
