Going out guide: the Fox and Folk edition

By Ted Simpson –

Folk Tunes at the HPH

Nova Scotia singer/guitarist Michael Dalton is making a tour stop at the Hintonburg Public House on August 20. Dalton is an extremely talented guitar player with some great, honest lyrics about the people he knows and the lives they lead. Sonically the tunes have the standard folk sound with dynamics that range from a soft finger picked ballad, to a harder rhythm and blues edge. The show starts at 9:00 p.m. and there is no cover charge.

Fantastic Film

Suzy Q Donuts have been good enough to continue their free parking lot movie series this summer, up next on August 21 is Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. It’s an animated feature about a family man, Mr. Fox (George Clooney), whose thievery puts him up against three super mean farmers. The voice cast is stellar, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray to name a few, and there’s a good dose of that Wes Anderson Weirdness.

The movie starts at sundown, bring your own chair or seating device. Someone brought a sofa last time – probably don’t try that.

Dueling Pianos

The Elmdale Oyster House is hosting Ottawa’s dueling piano due David Kalil and Tyler Kealey on August 28.

These guys perform every Saturday night at Fat Tuesdays in the ByWard Market, now you can get that downtown entertainment without the madness of actually going downtown. If you’ve never caught them before, these guys have some serious piano chops, Kalil has been performing for nearly 40 years and they’ve been doing the Fat Tuesday’s gig since 2003. So expect an extremely tight set of up beat feel good tunes.

Music starts at 11:00 p.m., so you’ve got lots of time for seafood beforehand.
