Going Out Guide: the beetlejuice edition

It’s a hectic time of year, Canada Day is coming up, school is out and children are now running amok on a daily basis. So here are some easy and free things to do in the ‘hood.

Beetlejuice!

This classic Tim Burton film is coming to a parking lot near you. More specifically, the parking lot at Suzy Q Doughnuts on Friday June 26.

These folks have been nice enough to set up a free movie screening for you, all you need to do is show up at dusk with a lawn chair. One of the greatest films ever made, with some of the best doughnuts ever made? Easy choice.

Garage Rock

Fresh off a Westfest solo performance this month, The Acorn are making another appearance in Kitchissippi on July 3. This time Rolf Klausener is bring the whole band together for a record release party for the new album, Vieux Loup. This album recently made the long list for a Polaris Music Prize.

This show is happening at House of Common, which is a photography studio on Fairmont Avenue, right near the corner of Wellington West. Just keep an ear open for some good tunes and an eye out for a big, golden garage door and you’ll be fine.

There’s a bbq that starts at 7:00 p.m. and the band plays at 8.

Nocturne

Cube Gallery is bringing back their neighbourhood star gazing party, Nocturne, for a seventh year. And you’ll have two opportunities to get in on the action.

The whole idea of the event is that we turn out the street lights (on Julian Avenue at least) and look up to enjoy the stars. The Royal Astronomical Society come out with some extremely powerful telescopes for everyone to get a truly unique view of the stars.

The stargazing parties are happening July 2 and July 9 at the corner of Wellington West and Julian Avenue.
